Iliolumbar syndrome - Buttock pain

Iliolumbar syndrome occurs when the iliolumbar ligaments becomes damaged or torn. This condition is also known as iliac crest pain syndrome.

Causes of iliolumbar syndrome

The most common causes of iliolumbar syndrome are repeated twisting motions, frequent bending actions and trauma, such as car accidents or falls.

Symptoms of iliolumbar syndrome

Common symptoms include persistent bouts of severe pain in the lower back, which may radiate to the hip and groin; pain often becomes heightened during movements which involve bending or twisting.

Treating iliolumbar syndrome

In most cases the back should be rested for a prolonged period of time; during this time it may be beneficial to ice the affected area regularly and take medication to manage pain and reduce swelling. Steroid injections may also be used.
