Sprains

A sprain is a common injury which can happen to anyone undertaking physical activity. The term ‘sprain’ implies a stretch or tear to a ligament, which is the tissue that holds bones together.

Symptoms

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Restriction of movement in the area of injury
  • Bruising or discolouration of the area

Treatment

Though potentially very painful, a sprain can easily heal with rest and (if necessary) anti-inflammatory medication. It is also possible to manage any discomfort or pain with ordinary painkillers.

The most common sprain injury is a sprained or ‘twisted’ ankle (see below).
