What is physiotherapy? An overview

Physiotherapy is a means of improving the movements of the muscles, joints and limbs. It is based on scientific foundations and provides support for traditional medical methods of treatment. Physiotherapy is a diverse discipline and can subsequently be used to treat a vast range of conditions. It is defined by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy as,

“Physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being, taking account of variations in health status. Physiotherapy is science-based, committed to extending, applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs its practice and delivery. The exercise of clinical judgement and informed interpretation is at its core."

Physiotherapy can be practised in a variety of settings and can treat people of all ages and backgrounds. It is commonly used as a rehabilitative measure as well as a means of improving movement and easing pain.
