Piriformis syndrome - Buttock pain
The piriformis muscle is located inside the buttocks and runs from the base of the spine to the femur. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed by the piriformis muscle.
Causes of piriformis syndrome
The root cause of this condition is compression of the sciatic nerve; this is often caused by back problems such as a slipped or herniated disc and pressure caused by contraction of the piriformis muscle.
Symptoms of piriformis syndrome
The most common symptom of this injury is pain in the buttocks, which may also radiate to the hips, things and feet. A patient may also experience tingling sensations and numbness in the buttocks and thighs.
Treating piriformis syndrome
Treatment for this condition is generally administered in line with RICE guidelines; the injury should be rested to allow it time to heal. In addition to rest, ice and medication to manage pain and swelling may also aid recovery.
