Continuous running places significant strain on the muscles and joints and can contribute to a variety of different sporting injuries. Consequently, sports massage is a popular form of therapy amongst runners.
Benefits of massage for runners
The main benefit of sports massage for long distance runners is the increased blood flow which allows the body to recover before doing another exercise session. Runners rely on sports massage both as a means of preparation and recovery and many choose to have sessions before and after an event. Physiological benefits include increased circulation, increased muscle tone, decreased muscle tension and an increased range of movement around the joints. Massage also helps the athlete to prepare themselves mentally prior to an event. After an event, massage will loosen the muscles and joints, facilitate the removal of waste products and toxins, ease tension in the muscles and relax the mind.
